Probably the biggest decisions are between swivel seats versus stationary, and stools with arms as opposed to those without. And the choice is determined by how and where the stools are going to live. If you have them in a spacious open area, and they serve as just casual relaxed seating when having a coffee or a beer, then bar stools with arms might be the better choice. It is nice and comforting to have an arm rest, particularly if you are no longer in the full flush of youth.

Obviously you can have arms with both stationary and swivel bar stools. The static stool with arms does reduce and restrict movement, and is the least flexible option. Just think if a group of people are seated on bar stools and table, and the conversation is flowing. If you are on a swivel seat, it is easy to turn towards the speaker or anyone in the group, less easy if you are seated on a stationary stool.

The stools with arms do tend to take up more space than those without, so if space is restricted, or you want to cram as many people as possible around the bar or table, then the armless stools would be more suitable.

Swivel bar stools can be handy because they offer manoeuvrability and convenience for the occupant. In a bar or restaurant, swivel bar stools are usually affixed to the floor, for obvious reasons of safety, and you could opt for stools which allow you to affix them to your floor if you so wish. But in most home environments, the stools are not fixed.
